"Here it is," Pat said, pulling into the mostly empty parking lot. There were only two other cars there. Dana had to go home to check on Cyndi, so it was just Pat and me. But she did make us promise to call with an update.

During the day, the place was definitely picturesque, with gently rolling hills, huge old oak and maple trees, and lush, thick, green grass peeking out between the piles of still-vibrant red, yellow, and orange leaves. Near the top of one of the hills, the two gargoyles stood guard near a crypt.

I got out of the car and walked over to the huge, ornate black gate that surrounded the graveyard. On the other side, a walkway wove around the graves before disappearing over a hill. The air was damp, filled with the scent of decaying leaves and rich earth.

"That's the path?" I pointed as Pat joined me at the entrance.

She nodded. "Yeah, see how it disappears from view? That's why it’s easy to feel like you're all alone on it. Between the hills, the graves, and the trees, there's huge portions of it that can't be seen from outside the gate."

"So, what's to stop someone from pretending to do the three laps? Couldn’t you just walk in far enough to be out of sight from the gate and then circle around?"

"Well, you'd basically have to cut across the entire graveyard to do that. See how far the paths are? And you'd probably be seen if you did. From what I understand, if there are enough kids, some of them will position themselves at the halfway mark, near the mausoleum. You'll see it … the path curves near a second gate. The rest of the kids would be stationed here. So the person doing the laps would need to pass both checkpoints."

"Makes sense. Okay, I guess the next step is to walk it and see if we find anything." I took a few steps into the graveyard and realized I was alone. I turned around. Pat was still standing at the entrance. "You coming?"

Her face blanched. "I thought I'd look around outside. You know, walk around the perimeter and see if there's anything the cops missed."

I crossed my arms. "Seriously? Pat, it's still light out." I pointed at the sun. "I thought the gargoyles only move around at night?"

Pat shifted from one foot to the other. "That's true. But it's still the week before Halloween. I'd feel a little more comfortable staying out here."

"So what happens if there's a funeral? You just wouldn't go?"

Pat snorted. "No. Of course not. No one in this town is stupid enough to bury a loved one the week before Halloween."

I threw my hands up. "Fine. I'll walk the path, and you walk around outside. Probably makes more sense to split up and search anyway, as it starts to get dark early this time of year."

"Meet you at the halfway point," Pat said, as she turned and started trucking along the outside of the gate.
